Classical Oil Glazing Technique 101
Classical Oil Glazing Technique 101
This introduction to a timeless oil painting technique will captivate both beginners and experienced artists alike. Used from the Renaissance to the Impressionist period, this method involves layering paint transparently over a grisaille underpainting, applying one color at a time to create stunning depth and intricate detail that will elevate your artwork. Throughout this 5-week session, we will focus on a single reference image, allowing you to master this technique and enhance your skills in a supportive environment.
The ultimate resource for aspiring artists eager to discover the essential supplies, master the use of oils and mediums, and understand the technical details that will elevate their skills for future techniques.
Basic Materials: Oil paints (White, Burnt Umber, Primary Colours), Walnut or Linseed oil, Alkyd medium, Primed canvas, brushes, a rag, Murphy’s Oil Soap or Linseed Soap.

Each session begins with a welcome and overview. You will know exactly how the session will unfold and the objectives.
There will be a moderator in attendance for all classes, who will show you how to effectively use the Zoom platform at the start of the first session. The moderator will control the waiting room, keep track of questions and manage any video and audio controls/troubles with the least disturbance to the workshop.
The classes are interactive and paced for you to work along with step-by-step demonstrations, Q&A’s and help along the way.
Review and critique. At the end of each session, there will be time for questions and concerns. Students may choose if and how they want to share their work.
The workshop encourages sharing in a private Facebook Group (Sharlena Wood Art Group) where you can upload your finished projects or in-progress homework, get feedback, and comment on your fellow classmates’ work. It’s a safe community space to share your work, and I offer comments on all work posted.
